What are you reading and watching?
Yes, this is an Outlander community but sometimes that means we are seeking stories very similar or just close to the realm of the Outlandish. I know after reading Outlander, I wanted something similar and ended up finding all kinds of Scottish romances that were good but not even close to being like Outlander. So we put this to you.

What historical/period pieces books are you reading?
Some of the ones I've loved aren't romances at all but simply historical. Currently, I'm in the middle of the Cousins' War series by Philippa Gregory. It is really good and it is where the Starz show The White Queen came from.

Speaking of Shows
Have you watched any historical shows or period pieces like The White Queen. Feel free to create a new post with a trailer for the show or movie and please give us a little description so we can either discuss how much we loved the show or oh and ah about how interesting it sounds. Also feel free to add your own overall thoughts of the series or movie so we have an idea why it really got you interested. Please don't post the trailers below... This way we are creating posts about some historical shows, which will give us the opportunity to discuss them in those posts. Also, if you share a show make the tag show: title. Thanks!

As for this post, let's talk books!

I'm reading The Cousins' War series out of order (unintentional) and just finished The White Princess which was really good and kind of sad to get a fictional take on the disfunction of the Tudor line even before Henry VIII.

I am currently reading the Poldark books by Winston Graham and loving them. There are 12 novels in all and I'm on number four now. The first two books form the basis for the current TV adaptation with Aidan Turner and the next two will be the basis for the second season of the TV show.

I'd also like to recommend an excellent trilogy that is both historical and a wonderful romance. It reminds me a bit of the Outlander books, but set in Russia rather than Scotland. The author is Paullina Simons and it's referred to as The Bronze Horseman Trilogy, that being the name of the first book. You can read about it HERE. The author of the blog loves the books as much as I do. Hmm, she says they are her favorite books ever, but I wonder if she's read the Outlander books.

I wish they were audiobooks... oh man they are.... going to go see how much... holy crap. Library!

Okay that "review" of the series sold me. I'm going to look for them and if this makes me disappear into a black hole like Outlander did... you know where I'll be. LOL

I'm so glad you found them. I assure you, you won't be sorry. I'd have to say this is my favorite series after Outlander. Oddly enough, I don't own the books, they were loaned to me by a friend, but I think I'll remedy that right away. I just got a new Kindle so this trilogy will be my first download. \o/

I've started watching the first season of Poldark, so far it hasn't quite pulled me in, but I'm curious enough to keep watching.

As for reading, right now it's just really easy literature.

In general I have a week spot costume dramas and such, anything Jane Austen related tends to score high with me.

Post the trailer. That way it attract everyone who loves Poldark. *wink*

That is actually what I've been reading recently. Just fluff that I can easily read and don't feel the need to curl up somewhere. But I also go in phases. I'll get into a SciFi phase or a historical romance phase or more recently a contemporary story phase. And then I just want those books.

I hear you! I will try almost anything with costome dramas!

I can't add the Poldark trailer/clip to my entry because it won't allow edits after there have been replies, but I'll add it here. I thought you didn't want trailers in a post about books.

BTW, The Bronze Horseman Trilogy is being filmed, too. IMDb.com says only that it's "In development." No other information.

I see someone already posted it. it ended up growing on me, looking forward to season 2 now.

I go into phases too, now it's easy reading paranormal romance stuff, next phase might be some fantasy or crime. I never know. I love reading though.

How many episodes of Poldark have you watched? I assure you it gets VERY interesting. It has intrigue, romance, sadness and it's definitely a costume drama and period piece. I strongly urge you to stay with it.

I've been re-reading the "Outlander" books, the early ones.

As for period shows -- I'm really enjoying another of Starz' shows, "Black Sails". Set around 1715 during the Golden Age of piracy. It's a bit of a prequel to the classic novel "Treasure Island" including characters from that book (Captain Flint, Billy Bones, John Silver) mixed in with real life pirates of that day (Charles Vane, Anne Bonny, Jack Rackham). It's very good.

The promo for season 1

Jill aka Jo: BS: Captain Flintsireesanwar on September 1st, 2015 10:24 pm (UTC)
I really tried watching Black Sails but I had a lot of trouble getting into it though there are some things I've heard about it recently which had made me reconsider it.

I feel like I would like it too because of the literary reference and the historical figures popping up.

I'm wondering if it got better with another season because I really had trouble with the first season.... I wonder if it is a binge watch show?

Maybe binge season 1 and 2? Cause season 2 really makes everything in season 1 click. You finally "get" Flint and why he's done all the things he has. Season 1 was good to me but season 2 was excellent.

Ah! Okay well, I know that most of the fall shows are starting soon but I might have just enough time to watch all that I've missed. I'll try it again!

Even not being a huge fan of the show so far... I love this icon.

Oh reading Outlander's early books is no fair because that means your reads are WAY cooler than ours. LOL

I really should start over but that seems daunting. Maybe audiobooks.
charleycharley_ryan on September 2nd, 2015 12:35 am (UTC)
LOL! I read "Outlander" back in high school, I believe. It hadn't long been published and by friend lent me her copy to read. She and I were always swapping books we loved. I just thought it cool to revisit now that the show has been made. :)
Jill aka Jo: BBT: Bernadettesireesanwar on September 3rd, 2015 04:34 pm (UTC)
Of course, in actuality, I've read it a lot. I would say the entire series 5 times. It is just a lot of reading and I have a lot I want to read so....

I may listen to them. I do have the audiobooks and I have always loved listing to Davina Porter narrate the story.

oops! I meant to say "third" season. I have watched season two on line. I don't have a flat screen TV and I watch a lot of shows on my huge, wonderful computer monitor. I watched it this summer just before I started binge watching Supernatural from season one.

I'm in the US...New Hampshire.

I'll add to the reading recommendations that I love George R.R. Martin's A Song Of Ice And Fire Series (of which the show "Game Of Thrones" is based on). I'm impatient for him to publish the next book.

In the theme of Scotland, anyone watch the TV show from the 90's "Highlander: The Series"? It's based off the first "Highlander" movie that starred Sean Connery.

I really liked it (well, until it jumped the shark at the very end of season 5 and had a horrid final season). It's about a 400 year old Immortal named Duncan MacLeod. It's set in the present day but there's alot of flashbacks to his centuries of life so it's like a new time period each episode. One eppy you might be with him in the Highlands of Scotland, the next in the Wild West of the U.S. or in WWII England. It's lots of fun for history buffs like myself.

I read the first four ASOIAF books, but after Game of Thrones started airing, I never went back to the books.

I saw the Highlander movie, but never watched the TV series. Maybe someday I'll get it from Netflix, but SPN is taking up all my time at present.

Okay so I've considered reading the ASOIAF series but have never gotten to it. Maybe.

And did you just say Highlander!??? OMG I own the series. I loved that show so much. Miss Duncan a lot. I have some of the Highlander movies too. I think that was one of my first forays into anything Scottish though truly Outlander is better.

I don't actually remember the last season but I do remember it not being great. Also that last Source movie. Oh dear me that was bad.

That is exactly the appeal of it. I loved how being immortal meant he saw all this history unfolding. I loved that Conner was in the first episode too.e
charleycharley_ryan on September 3rd, 2015 04:51 pm (UTC)
"The Source" was just horrible. LOL! And "Endgame" wasn't that much better. It's like they set out to undo everything the series had established.

I have seasons 1-5 on DVD. I didn't do Season Six because, well, it was bad. I loved the rest of the series, though. It was a new adventure every week popping up in different parts of history. I was bummed they didn't do a Methos spin-off. Now that would've been a lot of material to work with.

ASOIAF series is really good. I enjoy it alot.
