Surviving Droughtlander: What are you watching?
(This isn't really Outlander-related, but I thought I'd give it a go. If it violates the community's rules, I'll remove the post.)

As we wait for the next installment of Outlander to arrive sometime in 2017, I was wondering what other series people are watching and would recommend. Or maybe you've been wondering about a series and want to know if anyone here has watched and would recommend it, ask away! Share with us how you plan to survive until Outlander 3 hits the airwaves.

I'm binge watching Criminal Minds -- 11 seasons -- for the second time. Then I'll re-watch season one of Poldark, which will be back for season two in September. If time allows, I may watch all the seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A friend gave me the complete set a few years ago, but I've still to watch it.

Wow. I mean, I like Criminal Minds -- it's one of the few network shows I still watch, but I doubt I'd ever be tempted to rewatch it. I tried to watch Poldark, but it didn't do much for me. Didn't finish the first series. I dropped it for Versailles instead. I thought that was a lot of fun.

As for Buffy, I watched most of it, but never really loved it. My sister adores it, but I can't even remember if I even bothered to watch the final season.

I got hooked on Criminal Minds when the ION TV network started airing big blocks of episodes. I knew I wanted to see the entire series so I got the DVDs then watched the latest season on TV. I think the other only shows I've loved as much are Sons of Anarchy and Supernatural.

I also loved Poldark...probably because I love period dramas and Aidan Turner is VERY easy on the eyes. I've also read all the books in the series.

I may or may not like Buffy, but since the entire series was a gift, I'll give it a shot.

Oh I want to rewatch Buffy. I love that show so much. There were some really great moments. I'm in the second season of Supernatural. We stopped because of fall shows last year and now my sister and I have picked it up. I'd forgotten how many really good episodes there were in the beginning. Road Kill & Heart are my favorites.

So many people love Buffy so I'm curious to start watching it. Glad you're back on the Supernatural wagon. I'm very much looking forward to season 12. Hard to believe it's been around that long, but so has Criminal Minds. Its 12th season is coming up, too.

I'm rewatching due South. My headcanon is that due South's Benton Fraser is a descendant of Jamie Fraser.
siobhan63siobhan63 on July 31st, 2016 01:40 am (UTC)
Never got into Due South. Saw the odd episode here and there, but it just never did anything for me.

Just finished watching season 1 of Mr. Robot. I thought it was pretty much as good as most critics made it out to be, but I really don't get how Christian Slater beat out Tobias Menzies in the best supporting actor category at the Golden Globes. His role in Mr. Robot is nowhere near as complex or demanding as Black Jack Randall. But that aside, I highly recommend it.

I've just recently started Jessica Jones and Stranger Things (that last one mostly because Sam Heughan has been raving about it on Twitter). I've watched only one episode of each so too early for a critique yet.

As for current series, I'm enjoying season 3 of The Last Ship and season 3 of Murder in the First.

I also plan to get back to China Beach -- that superb Vietnam War drama from the late 1980s-1990s. I got the DVD box set as a gift a couple of years ago, and have slowly been making my way through the series. Also on the to watch list are seasons 2 and 3 of Peaky Blinders, and series 2 of Happy Valley.

I'm tempted by the Stranger Things, I did see Sam's raves on Twitter, but haven't tried it yet.

I totally gave up on The Last Ship in the second season because I just got so bored and couldn't take it anymore.

I have been watching the new American Gothic show and I've been really enjoying that.

I'm considering rewatching Gilmore Girls just because Mary & Blake of Outlander Cast are going to be podcasting the new show and maybe some old episodes of the show. I loved GG so much and I really want to see it again.

Was also tempted to rewatch Crimson Field with Rik Rankin but as I recall which it was a great show, Rik was barely in it before it got cancelled. And I think Home Fires is returning soon which is about the woman back home in England during WWII which makes me feel like I'm in the time period Claire is from even if she's out helping with the war effort. I've loved the cast and the stories so I'm really excited for the S2 of that show.

And Poldark. I know you didn't get into it but I loved it.

I just find The Last Ship lots of sun -- easy summer viewing when it's too hot to think straight!

I did recently watch Crimson Fields, and yes, Rik's hardly in it. It was OK.

I've never watched any Gilmore Girls because the premise never had much appeal. For whatever reason, I don't tend to like shows that are mostly all female or really heavy on the female side of things. Which is odd, I guess, being female myself and all, but things like Sex in the City, Girls, etc, just annoy the daylights out of me. Ditto for Orange is the New Black. But then there are exceptions, like China Beach. But even in real life, I much prefer hanging out with guys than women. I'm just weird, I guess.

I understand where you are coming from with that. I tend not to like females singers much and watch a lot of shows that are more about men. But Gilmore Girls is an exception to that rule. It was really good and soo funny.

I totally recommend The Expanse if you like sci-fi. Brilliant adaptation (and read the books too! They're great!). If you like historical stuff, Vikings is brilliant, Versailles was fun, LOVE Black Sails.
Jill aka Jo: 100: Raven & Wicksireesanwar on July 31st, 2016 05:56 am (UTC)
I couldn't get into The Expanse and I'm all about SciFi. Maybe I didn't stick it out long enough. I'll look into it.

I love Vikings but this last season promised so much Rollo and there wasn't enough for me. He's my favorite no matter what.
siobhan63siobhan63 on July 31st, 2016 01:17 pm (UTC)
Oddly, with The Expanse, my enjoyment of it increased once I'd started reading the books. My husband and I had started watching the show, watched maybe the first 2-3 episodes, then he went into one of his phases where he just won't watch any TV (he much prefers video games to TV watching). So I started reading the first book in the series. Then I went on and watched the rest of the series by myself. And then he realized I was watching it on my own, and decided he wanted to watch the rest too, so we started the series all over from the start, and by then I was on book 2. And I just really loved the first series on that 2.5 go-round.

Wow. Well maybe someday.

I enjoyed Versailles too. :-)
Jill aka Josireesanwar on July 31st, 2016 05:46 am (UTC)
Nah we did this last year too. I'm okay with it as long as we mark it as such.

Right now I'm into Black Sails. I'm about halfway into Season Three and I'm enjoying it. I think you just have to get through the first season and then it gets so much better.

Finished off Orphan Black which is another favorite of mine.
siobhan63siobhan63 on July 31st, 2016 01:04 pm (UTC)
Yeah, Black Sails took me two tries to get into. Not that season 1 is bad -- far from it -- it's just that the other seasons are so awesome! Too bad season 4 will be the last.

Speaking of Black Sails, I came across an article via Twitter which argues that Black Sails will be Starz's equivalent of HBO's The Wire -- meaning like The Wire, it won't win any awards but in retrospect will be considered among the best shows ever. The article also advances some theories as to why Starz's programs aren't getting the award nominations they deserve (basically, the network is too new still). It's a good read:

It is sad that season 4 will end Black Sails.

I think I've read that and it is sad in the extreme. I don't care how old a network or show is when it comes to what they are putting out. Granted Starz hasn't done well in the past but they have some great shows now and have worked hard to produce some quality work.

Another good series (IMO) if you like police procedurals, Bosch. I've binged the first two seasons. It's based on the novels by Michael Connelly. I'd never read any of his books, but have just started on his first Bosch novel because of the show. In the books, Bosch is a Vietnam vet, and in the TV series, they update that to him being an Afghan war vet. Titus Welliver stars, and he's very good. It's on Amazon Prime, or your fave torrent site if Amazon Prime isn't available where you live (as is the case for me).
Jill aka Josireesanwar on August 4th, 2016 07:58 pm (UTC)
Hmm have to look into it. Have Amazon Prime so... works.
