On Poldark and historical accuracy
I know that some of you are fans of the BBC series Poldark. I came across a very interesting article by the show's historical consultant on how she approaches each episode and the types of questions she must consider.

That was neat. I think the main this I learned that [Spoiler (click to open)]if Ross went to the colonies now he could run into Jamie and Claire. LOL

But seriously, thanks for sharing this. I love Poldark and I'm super excited about the show being back in the UK though it will be on PBS in a couple weeks.

You can watch it live when it airs in the UK using FilmOn TV, you know. But I guess the time difference with the west coast would make things too difficult!

I didn't know that. Have to keep that in mind.

Yes and on PBS it is airing two episodes at a time I believe.

This was very interesting. Thanks for posting it. Does FilmOnTV have all the British TV shows? I'll have to check it out.

It allows you to livestream all the UK terrestrial channels (so all of the BBC channels, ITV, Channel 4, etc., but not things like Sky). Just click on the TV Guide option under FREE in the menu, it asks you to choose an option, pick UK Live TV and you'll see what's on. There is also an option to record the shows, but I've not explored how that works.

Thanks for the explanation. I couldn't make heads or tails of the site when I went there.

I'm glad to see it has ITV. I have watched the UK's X Factor for many years on YouTube, but this year I keep getting the message about them not being available in my country. I love discussing the show with a friend in Wales and was so sorry to no longer be able to see it.

That is amazing.

This is a bit like the difference between academic and creative writing, the latter of which requires a completely different set of vocabulary that can be appreciated in the former only if one's done both to some extent. Sometimes working on these series as a consultant must be so depressing though. An informed choice for inaccuracy must be terrible to know about.

The thing that vexes me the most about Poldark is the circular plot. The Poldarks are constantly in distress and on the brink of bankruptcy, George and Ross never have a conversation that doesn't end with a jibe at George's lower birth, Francis always makes at least one monumentally stupid decision per episode, which he then cynically comments on, and Elizabeth bears her lot. I keep watching because I have Outlander withdrawal but I am not wowed by the lack of character and plot development. :/

I saw on Twitter that one scene from a season 2 episode involving an election received a fair bit of flack from academics because the vote was done by secret ballot, which wasn't introduced in the UK at that time, of course.

Not having read the books, I wonder if they are as circular as the series?

I do recall this from the books I've read but I also think George deserves those jibs. It isn't about him trying to rise above his station but the idea that he would do so dishonorably and with little regard for those who aren't as fortunate as he.

Ross's dislike for George is something I share.

Elizabeth annoys me and I just wish something good would happen for these people though I suspect it will just end up being awful again.
