107: "The Wedding" Discussion Post
As always, all book talk that doesn't pertain to the episodes we've seen is a SPOILER. Please use the SPOILER cut below.

Quick Recap:
Jamie and Claire are married and expected to consummate their marriage while Dougal and company wait downstairs. To break the awkwardness Jamie and Claire tell each other about themselves and their family, and about their day and what they remember of it. Claire starts to realize she's enjoying Jamie's company and attentions while also teaching him a thing or two about the bedroom activities. Throughout the wedding night, Jamie and Claire grow closer and discover a burgeoning relationship between the two of them. The next morning, after Jamie's gone downstairs, Claire shakes out her (stunning) dress. The ring Frank gave her falls out of the bodice and rolls across the floor. Claire retrieve the ring and puts it back onto her left hand (Jamie's is on the right).

Thoughts:
There are so many things to talk about and some serious things that I want to talk to book fans about so I'm going to do this post SPOILER FREE and then another very spoilerish post because wow... so much to say and reflect on. So Book fans, keep those comments for the next post. SPOILER POST HERE

  1. What did you think about the parallel to Claire's opening monologue about the pearls scattering and then the ring Frank gave her doing essentially the same thing?
“You forget your life after awhile, the life you had before. Things you cherish and hold dear are like pearls on a string. Cut the knot, they scatter on the floor, rolling into dark corners, never to be found again. So you move on and eventually you forget what the pearls looked like. Or at least you try.”

  2. Let's talk Dougal: Dougal seems slightly annoyed at Jamie and Claire's wedding when they are introducing themselves to each other, then at the tavern Dougal is rather rude to Jamie telling him he hasn't thanked him properly and then worst of all he makes a pass at Claire. Not only that but Dougal punches Rupert after he makes a lude comment. What do you make of Dougal's actions?

  3. What did you think of Rupert and Angus in this episode?

  4. What do you think that key Jamie had the ring made out of was for?

  5. Did you catch the palm reading from the first episode has now officially come to pass? Claire has traveled but stayed in the same place (Scotland) where she's meet stranger one of which was her husband! Ta da!

  6. What did you think of the whole retelling of both Jamie and Claire's recollection of their wedding day? (Claire being woken up by Murtagh and Jamie seeing Claire in her dress for the first time.)

  7. The wedding dress?????

More:

  1. Did you notice all the 3s in this episode? They were everywhere: 3 conditions on being married and therefore 3 scenes on those conditions which I'd count as one; 3 Bible verses being tossed around there by Willie; 3 men give Jamie advice (Rupert, Ned, and Murtagh); Priest wants the banns read 3 time on 3 separate weeks; and we have 3 sex scenes. My goodness there is just a host of them!

  2. What is a Bann? The public announcement in a Christian parish church of an impending marriage between two specified persons. The purpose of banns is to enable anyone to raise any canonical or civil legal impediment to the marriage, so as to prevent marriages that are invalid. Source

  3. Wedding right on the right or left hand: Claire is wearing Jamie's ring on the right hand and Frank's on the left. People are wondering why Jamie put the ring on the right hand and then answer is that it was common back then for the wedding ring to be worn on the right hand in some European countries. Apparently, this changed in the 1600s; however, it is likely some in Scotland still observed this custom and Jamie simply went with it.

  4. Who knew?

  5. Adorable behind the scenes gif:

Wow!! I'm excited about this community. I've just joined and I haven't read the books. I vaguely remember making the attempt way back when I was 14 or something, but I only remember Jaime outside her window! I don't think I got very far on that book. Wasn't planning to watch the show, but caught an episode On Demand and FELL IN LOVE. Most of that love has to do with nostalgia for Scotland (I lived in Stirling for year when I was in college) that then burgeoned into an abiding affection for Claire and Dougal and Angus and Rupert and DamnFine!Jamie. Now, I'm addicted!

So, The Wedding:
1) I thought the pearl imagery was actually very lovely, especially how it circles back in the end. Jaime offers the promise of new memories when he gives Claire his mother's pearls. He has, in essence, re-strung her life with new things to love and "hold dear." I LOVED that. Of course, as you say, then that ring comes rolling out and we realize that there is one lonely pearl still out there. That damned forked heart line that is splitting Claire.

2) Dougal is jealous and has been from jump street. He's attracted to Claire (see as early as The Gathering, I'd actually argue as early as The Way Out when he offers to take her to see Gellis Duncan), but he's very aware of her disdain for him (Rent, when she stalks out after Jaime following the tussle over Jaime's torn shirt). I think that Dougal doesn't know what to make of our Claire and is attracted to her for all of the modern ways that would probably drive him batshit in the long run. He can only admit to this physical attraction to her, even though he displays a great deal of pride over her commanding ways (The Garrison Commander).

6) I LOVED that they both experienced their wedding day so very differently. In many ways, it begins and emphasizes the way that Jaime is coded female in this episode. From his virginity to his greater interest and investment in a proper wedding and ceremony "to make his mother proud." Meanwhile, Claire spends the day drunk and hung over (although not as a result of a rowdy bachelorette party and if anyone wants to write a fic in which Claire has a crazy psuedo-hen night with Angus and Rupert in attendence, I will be only too thrilled to read it) dreading the coming wedding. And on that note, I loved that Jaime is overall just more invested and attached to Claire, at least in the beginning of the episode. From the beginning of their acquaintance, I think, he has show a partiality for her that has not been reciprocated very much. Yes, she is attracted, but she's always been searching for a way home and I think any fondness for Jaime has been primarily her seeking to familiarity and friendship, something stable in this strange situation that she's found herself in.

7) Okay. And I didn't like the dress. Or I did, I loved the underbust down, but I HATED that neckline. Her boobs looked like two jelly bellys squished and about to pop out of her dress. Everything else, I loved. The color, the sparkle, the sleeves. Love.

** Just a brief note on the ring finger ... I believe that in some Orthodox and Roman Catholic cultures, the ring is still worn on the right hand. I remember that figure skater Ekaterina Gordeeva (Russian) wore her ring on her right hand when she was married to Sergei Grinkov. I think they were Orthodox Roman Catholic. Don't exactly remember, but apparently, wearing the ring on the right hand was and still is a thing that people do.

I otherwise also loved the episode. Jaime's sweetness AND his kinda cluelessness. LOL! When he fell on Claire the first time and she had to tell him he was crushing her. Ha! His great "muckle" size (as Murtugh put it). Can't just lay on a girl like that, Jaime, m'boy! I also really loved how we go from that very raw, awkward coupling to Claire's lusty orgasm and finally to the very sensual and emotional fire side scene. You can really see the evolution of their relationship in those moments. Hurrah! Can't wait to watch more! And get my hands on the book. I totally feel like I have to read it now!

Oh, and I loved the structure. It felt more intimate, I think, because it really aligns us with Claire and we get to be bombarded in the same way that she is. I really don't think that she was really experiencing the events until AFTER wards. She looks so disconnected and lost in the wedding scenes that her acclimatization doesn't happen until they are in the bed chamber and since Claire in our point of entry, it makes sense that we experience the wedding as she kind of re-experiences it.

I loved all your comments, in both of your comment posts, because it's interesting to see that you really "get it" in spite of not having read the book. I hope all the non-reader viewers get as much out of the TV series and you did. If so, Ron and staff will have done justice to the book.

What did you think about the parallel to Claire's opening monologue about the pearls scattering and then the ring Frank gave her doing essentially the same thing?

I thought the camera work in this episode was brilliant -- all the sex and pre-sex scenes and Claire's reflection in the ring when she bent to pick it up.

“You forget your life after awhile, the life you had before. Things you cherish and hold dear are like pearls on a string. Cut the knot, they scatter on the floor, rolling into dark corners, never to be found again. So you move on and eventually you forget what the pearls looked like. Or at least you try.”

I found that ^^^ a bit confusing. Is she referring to her 1940s life?

Let's talk Dougal: Dougal seems slightly annoyed at Jamie and Claire's wedding when they are introducing themselves to each other, then at the tavern Dougal is rather rude to Jamie telling him he hasn't thanked him properly and then worst of all he makes a pass at Claire. Not only that but Dougal punches Rupert after he makes a lude comment. What do you make of Dougal's actions?

I think Dougal would have LOVED to have Claire for himself and all these actions are his resentment coming out.

What did you think of Rupert and Angus in this episode?

They were cute, but I'd rather they used to time to put in Jamie's speech about honesty.

What do you think that key Jamie had the ring made out of was for?

Terry Dresbach said it was his key to Lallybroch. I supposed it's not illogical that he would have kept it all this time in his sporran. He did hope to return there someday.

Did you catch the palm reading from the first episode has now officially come to pass? Claire has traveled but stayed in the same place (Scotland) where she's meets strangers, one of which was her husband! Ta da!

Yes, but having read the book, I already knew that would happen.

What did you think of the whole retelling of both Jamie and Claire's recollection of their wedding day? (Claire being woken up by Murtagh and Jamie seeing Claire in her dress for the first time.)

It was OK, but I missed how awed the clansmen looked when they saw Claire and how floored she was when she saw Jamie in his wedding attire. They both looked rather unimpressed, especially Claire. I liked the scene with Murtagh waking Claire and how hungover she looked.

The wedding dress?????

Well, the dress and story of how Ned obtained it clearly made for better TV. I thought the way Cait was spilling over the top was ridiculous. Even my husband thought so. Terry said there was originally lace at the top, but it was so fragile it kept tearing every time they put a heavy coat on and off Cait between takes. It would have looked MUCH better if they stayed with the lace...sturdier lace, if necessary. Cait looked stuffed into the dress.

I loved the BTS video where they showed how much Sam and Cait clearly like each other. And Sam and Cait's comments about filming with so much nudity.

I found the going back and forth a bit disconcerting upon the first viewing, but I've now watched it six times and it seems a good choice on Ron's part.
seraphceleneseraphcelene on September 24th, 2014 04:48 am (UTC)
OH, I forgot about Claire's reflection in the ring. I like that you pointed that out. Yes! It was definitely a firm reminder that Claire is a woman of another world with another life and husband. As representative of her split self, the ring is a perfect token. Even the type of ring that it is: Frank's shiny, golden wedding band to Jaime's iron key band. Gold would have been terribly precious in the 1800's and even the clarity of Claire's ring makes it very modern. The blacksmith mentioned silver immediately, so I wonder if wedding rings (should you be able to afford one) were typically made of silver. BUT, he also did not blink an eyelash when Rupert handed him the key.

I think the only clansmen that really were shown floored were Dougal and Murtagh. There were some exchanging of glances and an all around approving grin on Murtagh's face. Ned's date was also looking sufficiently impressed.

OMG! And the lace would have been ten times better! Yes, please!

My reaction to this episode.....
I start this post by saying I am a Watcher and period costume dramas are an obsession of mine. I have seen so very many of them. So, when I say, that Outlander sets the bar high for all period dramas to follow it is not said lightly. This series is the most amazing production I have ever seen. Sublime. I feel a squee of biblical proportions. EVERY single aspect of it is done with excellence and such an attention to detail that it makes my head spin. STARZ has spared no expense in making it and they are smart because it will pay off in spades. I have already signed up for notification when the DVD will come out on Amazon UK.
Alright onto the episode. Having such wedding day jitters before seeing it…..I had to watch it twice. Once for the shear enjoyment of the “first time” and a second to make any kind of coherent sense of my sentences.
I think for me what sets this wedding episode apart from other period costume dramas and most dramas for that matter is the choice to visually depict “lovemaking” vs just sex scenes. What a difference that makes. Their intimacy is what makes their lovemaking so powerful. That is the true beauty of it. There is such a natural chemistry between Sam and Cait and their give and take performances with each other makes the scenes so convincing. That core foundation is what makes this series so amazing. They are fearless really. Bravo.
Diana being the fabulous author she is, described the wedding episode the best in the discussion 92Y panel…… along with her visceral reaction comment about Sam.
The pacing of it intercut with the preparation was brilliant. But, the actual wedding…..I think I shed a tear for real and I haven’t even known these characters that long. It took my breath away. The slow motion, voice over and the reveal of Claire in her wedding dress was truly…..”The-Heavens-parted-and- the-angels-sang” moment. How Claire can go through that and not know that Jaime married her because every fiber of his being is completely and totally in love with her is beyond me. I guess I have to attribute it to the fact she was so hung over. What amazed me about Cait, was her ability to convey Claire’s inner turmoil of being in love with Frank her husband and yet falling in love with Jaime at the same time. She can’t reconcile that inside her own head and heart and it is so very unsettling to her. You can see the hesitance in her face and truly trying to hold back the flood gates of her growing feelings for Jaime. Jaime reaches her in a way that allows her to be truly herself in his presence. There is a freedom there that is different from what she has with Frank. That is why their lovemaking is very different. The ending of the episode with Claire looking at both her hands with a wedding band on each was brilliant!!!
*sigh* To be loved as Claire is loved…..and by two men….almost seems unfair. I have to remind/console myself that at least she is a fictional character. Any woman would want to be loved like that. That it visually comes in the shape of Sam Hueghan answers the question of why his twitter following is in the thousands. I almost feel compelled to send a thank you note and flowers to those responsible for casting him.

Onto the discussion questions....
1. I loved the pearls comment by Claire. I feel her inner turmoil so acutely with that. She is in a lot of pain because her strong beliefs of fidelity within a marriage are shaken to the core by her situation. The ring falling out of the dress at the end was magnificent. Just the magnitude of how they filmed that ring sequence was perfection. It visually portrayed the depth of meaning that ring represents. It was jarring and deliberately so. To see the rings on each hand and how vastly different they are I just loved too. Both these men are an expression of Claire. I do believe that one of the strengths Frank has in his favor is that he was there first BEFORE Jaime.

2. Dougal shocked me with his rather "flip" comment to Claire. I gave him too much credit. He was really icky at that moment for me and what a creeper. *bleh* I think he he mistook her for his brother's wife. He misjudged Claire's ideas of what marriage means to her. I think he misjudged Jamie as well. He will live to regret pairing Claire and Jaime. Plus, BJR is NOT giving up that easily, no matter what Dougal says. I think his report of that was premature. NO WAY BJR is giving up.

3. I am loving Rupert and Angus in this episode. From their antics busting into the room and then how they get the key made into a gorgeous ring was hilarious. They feel like the TV writers creation for the show though. Their pairing is just so delightful to watch. They are scene stealers those two. In such a dramatic and pivotal episode they add that needed lightness.

Re: Onto the discussion questions....
1. I do agree we are seeing the turmoil Claire is going through in regards to her marriages but it is all in how you look at time as to who came first. In time, Jamie did. But in Claire's life it is Frank. Still I don't know if I see it as a strength or more of a dress rehearsal for the real thing.

2. Dougal is very creepy in that moment and I do believe he will regret their match.

As for BJR, I don't believe he'll give up but I do think he won't seek them out as legally he has no recourse (not knowing technically who Claire is married too) and he doesn't want to get in trouble himself. But should they cross paths with him again??? Holy moly do I fear that reunion.

3. That is how I feel about them. They are almost adorable in their antics. I really hope we get a lot more of them.

more discussion questions....
4. The key feels important. Jaime has quite the collection of meaningful things he carries around with him. The Brooch Murtagh asks to see, the pearls of his mother and this key. It has to relate to his family somehow.

5. Those were uncanny predictions! They all have come to pass. I loved that her marriage lines are forked and you see that in how she looks at the palms of her hands with those two vastly different rings on each. But, don't you think, that lady who read the tea leaves knows about the folk song about the woman who travels through stones since she was out there dancing around them. She would have to know since she is a Druid. It is the story that inspires Claire to plan to escape back to where the stones are. You would think she would warn Claire somehow. Or at least when Frank reports Claire missing without a trace she says something. She has to put two and two together. She seems like a nice lady.

That is an EXCELLENT point. I hadn't thought of that! It would make sense that she would know the lore surrounding the stones, the history of missing people (women), and the implications for Claire's disappearance and where she was last reported to be. So, even if she didn't make the connections during the tea reading, you would think that afterwards .... Awesome conclusion.

discussion questions continued....
6. I loved the retelling of each of their days and what they did. It was fun, especially the black smith and Angus and Rupert. We know why Claire is drinking a lot, because of her inner turmoil she is trying to numb. But, I hate that Jaime seems to perceive that it has to do with him somehow. And in all their sharing of their family and their lives that night, what did she tell him about Frank and her marriage to him? I found that to be an interesting omission. I answered the wedding scene part of this question already.

7. The dress......was SOOOO amazing. Thank you for including the photo. I thought the simplicity of the design, yet the ornateness of the hand embroidery, delicate sleeves and skirt pleating was like nothing I have ever seen before and I know I won't see again in a period drama. That is what I mean about Outlander setting the bar so high for future shows to follow. Seeing that dress moved me to the the point I actually joined the discussion forum of the Costume Designer, Terry Moore. *sigh* But, seeing that magnificent work or art and labor or love crumpled on the floor next to Claire and Jamies' bed, broke my heart a bit. Plus, she so roughly shook that ring out. When she grabbed it off the floor, I was saying to the TV....hey.." Be nice to THAT dress, Claire!"

Re: discussion questions continued....
6. I agree. I do wonder if Claire will talk to Jamie about Frank. I also wonder how much she'll tell him.

7. LOL Okay but I'm thinking the fabric is supposed to be of a sturdy design so the dress is probably safe.

I thought it was very amazing. I wasn't thrilled with the top which looked painful to me but otherwise gorgeous.

More discussion questions....
1. This episode was completely loaded with 3s. I absolutely love it. We will have to do the "3s" scavenger hunt in all the episodes to pass the time of the MONTHS long hiatus. I don't understand the whole hiatus thing with STARZ. Do they want to lose momentum? I hate it. Don't like it.

2. So interesting a church rule. There must have been problems that resulted in creating this rule. I loved how the priest couldn't be threatened on pain of dying, but he could be bought so easily. Again, the needed lightness that an episode needs to be a piece of good TV writing. I loved the church. The stones were amazing. Having Jaime in all his finery come up those steps and see Claire outside for the first time...*sigh*

3. I had been told that as well by my Irish friend. I think it is great because it deepens the difference between the two time periods and the mores and norms of each. But, what it also shows as well as far as Claire is concerned is how well both fit and suit her. How does a strong committed woman reconcile THAT? I guess only further episodes will let us know how Claire handles it. A part of me really doesn't want her to leave Frank for Jaime. I know she does, how could Claire have a wedding night like that with Jaime and NOT choose him.
Jill aka Josireesanwar on September 27th, 2014 06:23 am (UTC)
Re: More discussion questions....
1. So I think the idea behind the hiatus is that they just stopped filming Season One. So now they are taking a break before scouting for locations for Season Two and doing the writing, costumes and so on. This is going to be a major amount of work and I believe this means that if they take a few months off they will start the second season in the New Year. This means they should be 3 months into the work when the Second half of the First Season starts. So then hopefully we will be seeing the Second Season next August again.

I think they are just trying to space it so we don't end up waiting a year between seasons. That I can appreciate.

2. I would guess so. I don't know that much about it but I've always found it interesting while reading.

I too loved Jamie in his finery.

3. I won't go into details but there seemed to be a little more reason in the books.

I do wonder what TV Claire's reason will be and how that will all go down.

More discussion questions...
4. Love that you had this visual of the key.... I had no idea. Plus, how that key became a ring. I have been looking at the ring and I still don't see the parts coming together. What a great Blacksmith they had. Again, the simplicity and rustic look of it, embodies a 18th Century way of life.

5. I absolutely am in love with this little gif of yours. Thank you, thank you!!! Those two are the greatest. In the most magnificent clothes or nothing at all....those two have their own light and together...they are more than the two of them apart. CHEMISTRY!! WOW!!!! They pulled it off and gave us all the most amazing gift of sheer bliss in the love story of Jamie and Claire. BRAVO Sam and Cait!!!

Re: More discussion questions...
Just another nod to the "Sam and Cait" chemistry. Such a spirit of fun the two of them have. This vid is great and it relates to episode 7 so I feel it is appropriate. It just needed your little gif to be included in it. I will, embarrassingly admit that I found Outlander through 1:09-1:16 of this vid. The happiest an Ad has ever made me, to find my way here. Yay!!

I can't wait for Friday, 9/26/14 at 1pm ET for the twitter Q&A with Sam and Cait. I am setting my iphone alarm. Have fun everyone!

Just to add to the reviews for this episode.....
Hi all you Watchers!!! I feel like we are that special group, that visually get our first experience to Outlander without preconceived notions. There is a freshness and bliss about it. So, I am a proud watcher.

I wanted to add this article I found through Anne Kenney's twitter (writer of this episode) that speaks to us Watchers about The Wedding Episode. http://www.vanityfair.com/vf-hollywood/2014/09/outlander-wedding-episode?mbid=social_twitter

I apologize if this was somewhere else already sireesanwar.

Thanks for this! You know you are always welcome to create a new post. As long as it is about Outlander and not really off the wall it is acceptable.

I reply to your previous post on pod casts...
Hi. I tried out a podcast that is spoiler free. http://www.outlandercast.com/ and I love Blake and Mary. I listened to their first one for this episode and I loved it. I feel safe there. Not to spoil what is to come and preserve our Watcher eyes...*wink* Blake is a Watcher and he really embodies the Watcher journey. It was great to see the guy perspective on such a romantic episode. Just are really lovely couple.

I love the too. I love that they are very spoiler free. It is an interesting perspective for me as a reader. Their Wedding Cast was so good. Blake made me love him more.

Random. I was watching The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug last night and I suddenly flashed back to Fellowship of the Ring and the way Peter Jackson liked to do that thing where you could see people's reflections in the ring. LOL. Then suddenly I was thinking of Claire and her image in Frank's ring after it fell out of the dress. Could it be? Frank's ring is The One Ring of Power?! Could Frank be Sauron in disguise?! Fandoms are colliding in my head here, people!

LOL! Just kidding. But a funny cross-pollination of images, anyway.

I saw it too. Most definitely. Your question is actually answered if you listen to the Ron Moore podcast for each episode he does with his wife. You will love the answer. ;) I know I did.

I love the emphasis given to ring actually. It is the link Claire has to Frank. It is the one tangible thing she has with him. The one thing she remembers in her hangover haze of her wedding. She removes it truly I believe, out of respect for her marriage to Frank and puts it close to her heart. I love how the writers deliberately showed her doing that without Jaime or the others seeing. She was about to marry this other man, even though it is Jaime Fraser, out of necessity to survive in this place. Frank(the ring) doesn't have to bear witness to it in a way. Plus, it gave the writers a way to have it come back in SUCH a powerful way. Thank you Anne (the writer) for that.

Another great review of this episode....
Hi all you Watchers who want to remain unspoiled....

Here is a review of the Wedding Episode that I really loved reading. She also includes at the end of it the Starz Inside Look at the episode and a well edited and emotionally spot on vid for Claire and Jamie to a song by Ed Sheeran. I am happy that writer Anne Kenney gave a link to this article. Here it is..... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/29/outlander-wedding_n_5896284.html Enjoy! It is a great way to start a Wednesday Morning....
