107: "The Wedding" SPOILER Post

Quick Recap:
Jamie and Claire are married and expected to consumate their marriage while Dougal and company wait downstairs. To break the awkwardness Jamie and Claire tell each other about themselves and their family, and about their day and what they remember of it. Claire starts to realize she's enjoying Jamie's company and attentions while also teaching him a thing or two about the bedroom activities. Throughout the wedding night, Jamie and Claire grow closer and discover a burgeoning relationship between the two of them. The next morning, after Jamie's gone downstairs, Claire shakes out her (stunning) dress. The ring Frank gave her falls out of the bodice and rolls across the floor. Claire retrieve the ring and puts it back onto her left hand (Jamie's is on the right).

Okay everything below is completely and utterly SPOILERISH!

  1. The key ring? I keep hoping this "ring" is really just a place holder for the upcoming ring but my concern is that Starz is selling this ring on the Outlander Store meaning it is the ring. I really hope not though I do wonder what the key was too?

  2. How did you feel actually seeing the Blood Oath?

  3. How did you feel about the Secrets and Lies conversation being absent from the episode/wedding night?

  4. Did you think the wedding recollection was as good as the book?

  5. Was there anything from the book you missed seeing in the show?

  6. Murtagh's recollection of Ellen doesn't happy this early in the story, though I liked it. How did you feel about Murtagh in this episode?

  7. What did you think about Dougal's premature (it happens later in the book) pass at Claire? Do you think it worked better here rather than later when Jamie is in danger?

Gosh, there are three posts so I'm not sure where I should post comments, but here goes.

The key ring? I keep hoping this "ring" is really just a place holder for the upcoming ring but my concern is that Starz is selling this ring on the Outlander Store meaning it is the ring. I really hope not though I do wonder what the key was too?

You're kidding! Starz is selling that ring in their shop? Well, Jamie better get the silver ring with thistles and the inscription. Maybe he'll do it when they get back to Leoch. I have a replica of that ring that was sold when the book came out.

Terry said the key was Jamie's key to Lallybroch. I guess it's not illogical that he would have kept it in his sporran all this time.

How did you feel actually seeing the Blood Oath?

I'm glad they kept it in and that Claire looked shocked, like she was supposed to.

How did you feel about the Secrets and Lies conversation being absent from the episode/wedding night?

I didn't like it. That's crucial so hopefully it will be in the next episode.

Did you think the wedding recollection was as good as the book?

It was OK.

Was there anything from the book you missed seeing in the show?

More than is allowed in a comment space, but yes...a lot.

Murtagh's recollection of Ellen doesn't happy this early in the story, though I liked it. How did you feel about Murtagh in this episode?

I loved how concerned he was for Jamie and he showed how much Ellen had meant to him. I wish Jamie had given the pearls to Claire before the wedding, like in the book. I missed Dougal's shock at seeing Jamie do that.

What did you think about Dougal's premature (it happens later in the book) pass at Claire? Do you think it worked better here rather than later when Jamie is in danger?

It worked OK here, but it would have been better if he was drunk. His lust for Claire would have seemed more palatable that way.

3? I only posted 2. What is the third?

I have "Claire's Ring" also and I don't want this to be the official ring of the show but Terry just made a post about it and I fear it will be which I'm feeling resigned to even though I don't love it.

I, too, hope they talk about Secrets and Lies in the final episode. It is necessary as it is the basis of Jamie and Claire's relationship.

I'd forgotten Dougal has been there when the pearls were given. Gosh that would have been something to see though he might see them anyway. We'll have to see.

We'll I do remember in the book when Claire asks for his help after Jamie is captured that Dougal essentially does this scene but it almost seemed to early though I do felt it worked. Still, I think it let the audience in on Dougal's feelings which might work out well when revelations about Dougal and Geillis come to light.

You cross-posted one of them in your personal LJ and that's why I thought there were three different entries.

Yes, Jamie gave her the pearls before the wedding and Dougal was shocked and said he shouldn't do that...Those were your mother's pearls!. And Jamie replied And now they're my wife's...or something like that. [Spoiler (click to open)]I wonder if it will come out in the film that MacRannock (I think that was his name) loved Ellen and was the man who gave her the pearls. I'd almost forgotten about Geillis and Dougal. That comes up again in MOBY.
Jill aka Josireesanwar on October 2nd, 2014 07:51 pm (UTC)
Oh LOL! Okay.

I would love to see Claire wearing them around.

I hope the pearls and MacRannock come back up too. - was going to do a spoiler cut but forgot this whole post is a spoiler post - I can't wait to see all the revelations about Geillis and her time traveling and murderous ways.

1. If this turns out to be THE ring then I will be GUTTED. It is NOTHING like the ring in the books. And where is the inscription hmmmm? NEED THAT. As above, supposedly it's the key to Lallybroch, so I suppose is maybe going to turn out to be symbolic for reasons of Claire being his home now. BUT I WANTED THE REAL RING.

2. The blood oath was awesome. I loved it. I found it to be heartfelt in the books and I thought it really translated well here.

3. I really missed the secrets and lies convo because I think it's actually very important in terms of understanding how much both of them are keeping back whilst still wanting to be honest with each other. It's one of the best moments for me and I hope that they stick it in next week or somewhere instead.

4. I thought that the wedding episode was great. Did it happen differently in my head? Yes. Was this nonetheless one of the best hours of TV ever? YES.

5. Mostly I just missed 'Holy God' and 'Don't stop now' but I'll survive!

6. MURTAGH IS THE ULTIMATE JAMIE/CLAIRE SHIPPER. I THOUGHT HIS LITTLE HEART WOULD BURST. MURTAGH 5EVAH.

7. I'm actually finding it really hard to 'get' Dougal in the show. He's neither the nice guy with a few lapses nor the villain trying to be good. I don't know. I feel as though all the moments with him leching on Claire are headed for something more than we get in the books though. The foreshadowing has been waaaaaaaaay intense.

Mostly I just missed 'Holy God' and 'Don't stop now'

I missed that, too, but at least we got "I thought my heart would burst." That - and it being said in Gaelic - was one of my favorite lines, too.

I just adore Murtagh. He cares so much about Jamie. I loved what he said about Claire's smile and the look on his face when he said it.

Dougal? Well, I see him as conflicted. He'd have liked to have Claire for himself, but that just wasn't possible. He's already married, he couldn't become laird if he had an English wife and having her as a mistress wouldn't have solved the problem with Jack Randall, plus Claire would NEVER have agreed to that. But Dougal is infatuated with and intrigued by Claire, that's obvious.

See, I know that in the books he's married and couldn't become laird with an English wife, but that has NEVER been explicitly stated in the show. So that's my problem with the way that he's being portrayed. Yes, I get that he's infatuated with her, but without telling us why that is, I feel that people who have not read the books are just totally confused and I can understand why. And there's a difference between being infatuated and propositioning your nephew's wife! On her wedding night no less!

True, and Dougal wasn't even drunk...yet. I'm sure he was headed that way though.
catteo: [outlander]jamie|claire dare you to movecatteo on September 26th, 2014 07:15 am (UTC)
Yup. This exactly. I'm just finding that he veers so violently between being the guy that doesn't hold with rape to the guy that almost does rape Claire in a corridor. Between the guy who has a sense of honour and a guy who propositions his nephew's wife on her wedding day. The man who wants to bring back a Scottish king but who saves a Sassenach wench from BJR. I understand that he's fascinated by Claire and probably torn between wanting her and knowing what's good for him but he's just black and white from one minute to the next. I wouldn't mind if he was grey all the time, I just don't know how to get a handle on him as a character in the show.
Jill aka Josireesanwar on September 27th, 2014 06:54 am (UTC)
1. I really think it is going to be. I keep hope they are tricking us but I'm not sure they will. I think it is going to be the key to Lallybroch which seems odd that he'd have it cut up like that. Yes, he kept the important parts but still... it is odd.

2. I think so too. It was great.

3. I hope so too because it is also the basis of their marriage. It is something they come back to as their lives progress.

4. It really was awesome. Like you said not what I imagined but just as good.

5. Ah me too!

6. I'm crushing on Murtagh so much. He's a romantic.

7. I fear that Dougal is going to make a much bigger move towards Claire than he did in the books.
