115: "Wentworth Prison" Discussion Post

All book talk that doesn't pertain to the episodes we've seen is a SPOILER.
Please use the SPOILER cut below.

*Sigh* I knew this would be a tough episode to take though admittedly I didn't realize we wouldn't see much but are given more of the psychological. So right now I have this love/hate relationship with this episode. It is a brilliant episode. I loved the acting. I love the story telling but I hated what was happening so much. I guess that is actually a sign of a good story though, to envoke so much emotion. So here goes nothing.

Jamie was about to die. He watched MacQuarrie die (so sorry I was spelling it really wrong before) and now he's up to hang. Only a very dark knight comes to his rescue and we are all horrified right along with Jamie. Jamie is then whisked off to a dungeon where he is chained to the wall and in walks BJR quoting Le Morte d'Arthur by Malory only he gets it a little wrong because he's said Britian not England. ("Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born of all England.") We find out and Randall heard all about the petition of complaint against him because the Duke of Sandringham had a big mouth. (Stupidhead.) And he burns the thing before Jamie's beautiful eyes (but did you see Randall's eyes because they were all kinds of mad).

Meanwhile, Claire is failing miserably at getting in to see Jamie and ends up being given his personal effects and leaving only to break down outside of the prison, needing Murtagh to kind of take over the whole walking thing. But back at an undisclosed tavern, Angus and Rupert are losing their money to get information which will help them get into Wentworth somehow (Claire I don't get the plan still???). Claire then returns to the prison and ransacks Sir Fletcher (did you catch that this is Frazer Hines who was the original inspiration for Jamie!!!) office but they only find the keys not a "You are here" map of the prison (really why would the guy have a map of his prison).

Randall is going on and on about Jamie seeing Randall in his dreams (pretty sure Randall is the one having the dreams of Jamie) and giving Jamie a noble death (crazy much?). Jamie's not going to surrender to Randall though he'll let Randall see his back (and I was thinking, no Jamie wouldn't do that) but it is ruse to get Randall closer so Jamie can attack but then Jamie's fighting off Marley and in  the end Randall has Marley hold down Jamie's hand while he smashes it (and I fainted). He then "comforts" Jamie and himself with Jamie's hand but Jamie does murmur "I'll kill you". Randall leaves Jamie for a bit while Jamie thinks about why he's making Randall hurt him (sick F).

Claire finds the back door and takes apart the lock (good thinking though I'd think someone discovering that might just put it back together). She then goes into Jamie's cell (first she goes to several other cells calling out his name) and tries to free Jamie but Randall appears saying to Claire that she just appears everywhere (you too buddy you too!). Claire endures some unwanted attention and then attacks Marley and then Randall while Jamie kills Marely, Claire tries to strangle Randall but it doesn't work and soon she's at his mercy which prompts Jamie to offer himself up to keep Claire from harm.

Randall (I affectionately call him F-in' Bastard) nails Jamie's crushed hand to the table and forcibly kisses him but that is when Jamie gets to say his goodbye to Claire with a tender kiss and an I love you. (Have I mentioned just how much I hate Randall?)

Randall walks Claire out and but not before Claire tells Jonathan Wolverton Randall born September 3, 1705 when he's going to die (whoa mad skills Claire! Look at Randall's terrified face.) But he then pushes her down the body shoot. Randall returns to Jamie so he can cut his shirt off and extol over Jamie's back and disgust us all more.

Claire runs off into the woods to find Murtagh and the gang who take her to MacRannoch who is unwilling to help until he discovers who's son Jamie is (Ellen is Helen of Troy I think) but he can't think how because that is Murtagh's job oh and MacRannoch's cows. (Think should be good.)

So I ask, how many Kilts would you give this episode?

Thanks. I try. I think I'm going to try summarizing each episode like this.

Feel free to discuss!

Still digesting this episode, but here goes.

1. What was your favorite moment of this episode?
Heroic Claire. The fact that she won't give up on Jamie no matter what.

2. BJR comes off as he's saving Jamie from a common death. He seems to think he's doing Jamie a favor. What do you think of BJR's reasonings?
BJR is on a power trip, it's why he's so focused on Jamie surrendering to him. He's a depraved creature.

3. What did you think of Claire's plan to get in to see Jamie and "free him" or just break in when Sir Fletcher was at prayer and free Jamie?
I liked the plan, but I felt she wasted to much time trying to find a map. I don't really understand why the warden would keep a map of the prison.

4. What did you think of Claire telling BJR the date of his death and do you think his foreknowledge of the event could mean Claire could possibly be changing history?
I loved this part, the look on his face, everything about it. Claire being the rebel till the end.

5. How did you feel about our strong capable hero being the one to be sexually assaulted?
It puts the stakes high, but I don't like it.

6. What did you think of Tobias Menzies acting in this episode?
Very good, if I ever meet him in real life I might be tempted to punch him.

7. What did you think of Sam Heughan's acting in this episode?
Very good as well.

8. Feel free to comment on anything else you can think of because this is a hard one to look at.
All three actors deserve some serious recognition after this, these two last episodes are walking a very fine line, but so far the violence doesn't feel gratuitous, it's driving the story forward. I really hope they won't show to much in the next episode though because I found this one hard to watch.

1. I've always loved that Claire is so heroic. She'd battle the devil (or BJR) for Jamie and it is one of those things that I love about DG creating this strong female character.

2. He so is! Boy is BRJ crazy. I think he's just trying to justify his desire to harm someone else for his own pleasure.

3. Thank you! I don't get that either? Why would they even have a map of the priosn... does it say "YOU ARE HERE" on it? That didn't make sense at all. It would have been simpler if Murtagh gave her an idea of where to go or even those two guys Angus and Rupert were losing too.

I liked the idea of her getting in there when Sir Fletcher was away from his desk but the prior idea of getting in to see Jamie seemed... pointless.

4. I know! My favorite moment in the episode. I loved how freaked out he looked but then he didn't dwell on it too long. Still Claire is a badass lass.

5. I don't like it either but I liked it wasn't done like a female being weak or the man being weak. Here we get to see a strong male lead assaulted because he turned over his will to save his wife. Jamie is the King of Men! But here is the thing... I don't think Jamie needed to keep his word here.

6. LOL He's brilliant and scary, no?

7. Everyone keeps extolling Tobias's acting chops but I think Sam is brilliant. We totally got to see how fantastic an actor he is in this episode. And I kept forgetting it was Sam and just seeing Jamie.

8. I totally agree. Sam, Cait and Tobias did an amazing job in this episode. If I were in charge of Emmy's they'd get them all.

I too hope the next episode has a little less violence though I do suspect we'll learn more about Jamie's time with Randall but hopefully it will have more of him healing and Claire taking care of him or something.

Now that the season is finished I will say that I'll be gobsmacked if Sam, Cait and Tobias don't get some serious recognition for their acting. These last two episodes must have been really though for them as actors and I think they've done amazing work.

Me too. I really hope Outlander and these three get lots of recognition. I want them to win things but even if they are nominated it means the Powers that Be are paying attention.

Agreed, it would be great if they just got some nominations.

Yes!
