Another Lord John question
I've been re-watching season 2, this time with my husband (first time viewing for him). Last night was episode 209, wherein we meet the young Lord Grey for the first time.

Which made me wonder, why did he call himself William Grey at that time, but in future books (and I assume in season 3 and onwards), he uses the name John? I know his full name is John William Grey, but was it ever explained anywhere why he switched from using William as his first name? If it was explained in one of the Outlander books, I don't remember that bit.

The real reason is that Diana Gabaldon decided after having him call himself William that she wanted to use the name William for a different character (and it was already Jamie's older brother's name). So, she changed it later and the presumption is that Lord John used his middle name when he first met Jamie and Claire at Carryarrick.

Thank you. I had thought something along the lines of your last bit -- that he opted to use his middle name when he was caught attempting to kill Jamie, but hadn't thought of the more mundane "author's prerogative" reason!

I might be making this up, but I feel like there's also an in-book reference to it--maybe towards the end of Echo in the Bone?--where Grey explains.

Yes, I think Grey tells Jamie he did it to try to hide his identity but it isn't the best answer.

I honestly don't think there is ANY Outlander question you can't answer. ;>) You're amazing.

Oh, there certainly are some, but I've read and posted about (and obsessed!) about the series enough to be able to answer a lot of them. LOL
